Herpetological collection (Reptilia)

The Herpetological collection (Reptilia) consists of dermoplastic and wet preparations. The collection of reptiles includes lizards, snakes and turtles. The oldest preparation is a wet preparation of an Orsini’s viper (Dinara, March 15, 1899) which was caught and prepared by Mihajlo Katurić. The majority of prepared specimens have full data about the place and time when they were collected. Most reptile species in Croatia are protected by the Nature Protection Law and killing and disturbing them is prohibited so that it is difficult to add new specimens to the collection. Because of this new prepared preparations are made only from reptiles that were killed in accidents so that old collections are valuable both because of data relating to finds as well as because of other modes of scientific research.
