Vjekoslava Maštrovića i djelatnika tadašnjeg instituta.

Sidra, Brodski dijelovi i ukrasi, Oružje, Slike, grafike i crteži, Instrumenti za plovidbu, Brodska oprema, Modeli brodova, Havarija broda „Petar Zoranić", Zemljopisne karte i globusi, Pomorske uspomene, Ribarski predmeti, Arhiv i Priručna knjižnica.

Zahvaljujući Narodnom muzeju Zadar ovom izložbom pod nazivom „Pomorsko nasljeđe" dio pomorske zbirke Zavoda za povijesne znanosti HAZU u Zadru postaje dostupnije javnosti.

HISTORICAL-MARITIME COLLECTION of the Institute for historical sciences of Croatian Academy of sciences and arts in Zadar

The original idea of the present-day Historical-Maritime collection of the Institute for historical sciences of Croatian Academy of sciences and arts (HAZU) in Zadar came from a Maritime collection which was established in 1958 owing to the employees of the then Institute for Historical and Economical Sciences of Jugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (JAZU), particularly dr. Vjekoslav Maštrović. The collection within this institution was founded with the purpose of collecting artifacts witnessing the development of shipping on the territory of Northern Dalmatia from prehistoric time to the 20th century.

Due to the impressive growth of the collection in the following years, the experts working on it had the idea of extending it into a museum display, and in 1966 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of JAZU the Maritime Museum was officially opened. The task it had was to collect items and documentation relating to the past development of shipping with the special emphasis on the Zadar-Nin area, which was one of the centres of Croatian shipping in the early Middle Ages. Despite its name, the Maritime museum has never really been a museum and since its foundation it has functioned as a Historical-Maritime collection within the Institute.

The collection was displayed in five rooms, in the following chronological order: Prehistoric and ancient period, Period of early Croatian shipping, Sailing-vessel period, Steamboat period, Period of contemporary motor shipping (with a special unit covering the tragedy of the tanker "Petar Zoranić". The records of the museum property were kept according to the following collections: Anchors, Ship parts and ornaments, Weapons, Pictures, graphics and drawings (Iconography), Navigational instruments, Ship equipment, Ship models, Shipwrecked tanker "Petar Zoranić", Charts and globes, Maritime memorabilia, Fishing equipment, Archives, Library.

Thanks to National Museum Zadar, with the exhibition "Maritime heritage" a part of Historical-Maritime collection of the Institute for historical sciences of Croatian Academy of sciences and arts is now open and available for public.
